IcyAlert (2025-2031)
"Intelligent Climate Early Warning Alert for Arctic Ice-Free Summers"
IcyAlert (Intelligent Climate Early Warning Alert for Arctic Ice-Free Summers) is a research project funded by the Novo Nordisk Fundation (NNF). It runs from October 2025 to September 2031.
The project goal is to improve predictions of Arctic ice-free summers and its potential climate impacts at multi-seasonal time scale using global climate models, causal analysis and machine learning.
IcyAlert is led by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), in partnership with RMI and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
Specific research topic at RMI: Identify predictors of Arctic ice-free summers
Based on the Liang-Kleeman information flow method, already used in the context of past studies and projects in the group, we will identify the most likely predictors of Arctic ice-free summers and we will also analyze the climate impacts of such events, focusing on European climate. These predictors will be injected into machine learning models, which will provide improved predictions of Arctic ice-free summers at multi-seasonal timescale. We will work in close collaboration with DMI and DTU to develop an early warning system.
